how these spaces shape us
three paintings were produced as the result of a five step study process. first through an interview period, the subject was asked to describe a site they have a strong emotional attachment to in their memory. nothing was asked about what occurred in the place- just what structural elements they were able remember. next, an hour long portrait study was done with the subject along with a few photographs. following this, a rough cardboard model of the space described was constructed and photgraphed. a collage was produced utilizing the photographs and used as reference for a painting. this project was intended to study what architectural aspects stick with people and what is allowed to fade to time. how do different people recall spaces? do we differentiate our experiences from their settings, or do the locations we inhabit inevitably inhabit us as well? the first painting was digitally redone in 2019.
