bancroft shading structure
by utilizing small diameter timber (5" diameter), this design proposal for a bench shading structure takes advantage of a material often wasted. the flexible qualities of this material is utilized while also showing the opportunities of sustainable material use. each arch would be softened with steam and heat then bent to the proper curved form. the structure uses bending moments to create the arched members which provide shading to the necessary bench area while also promoting visibility toward the street. three connection types are utilized - a nail plate molded to the two members, a steel plate with threaded bars to ground the structure, and a bending moment connection to laterally stabilize the vierendeel frame arms.
